OK, so I realize this post is almost 2 years old, but I was watching this last night, and I thought the same thing... But I think I've figured it out. Sir Wilfred says something like (not a direct quote here) "Each individual owner can open the door twice". So Mark already used up his two, but in the future, Sarah is technically the owner, so she can still open the portal twice.

The part about Sarah makes sense, but the part about Mark is not. The timeline that Mark and Sarah traveled in belonged to another dimension that is just similar to the one that the first movie took place in (and the 2nd one begins and ends in), so the pass-the-trinket-through-the-generations trick wouldn't work.
it should also be stated that there were in fact TWO time-openers (first one was destroyed during the alien scene. Wilfred gave him the second one). Either Mark did in fact use the 2nd time-opener a 2nd time, or that he simply gave it to somebody else and had him/her use the time-opener.

I looked it up on the internet and according to Wikipedia (I know, I know but hear me out) it's a totally different one. Somehow he got another one and arranged for it to be sent to her I guess. I don't get the alternet dimension thing either unless he gained an ally on that side who could travel back to the main reality and make the arrangements or something. Guess we're not supposed to think so hard about it. :)
