would make a good comic book or novel series and could have more backstory aswell

There was a comic book series based on it. You can still buy used copies online -- for example, at http://www.newkadia.com/?Comics=4071 (and of course through Amazon.com). I haven't read it, though, and it may be just an adaptation of the movie rather than a continuation of it.

I don't think there's been a novel series, but there's a novelization of the film.
