When it came out I rated it a 7/10, but that was because at this time we had lots of other great action movies coming out. I also felt that Emmerich wasn't the right director for this kind of stuff, although he definitely delivered.
In these days when most "action" movies suck this movie has become a true classic.

This movie is a guilty pleasure for me - liked it as a kid and still like it now. I'd rather watch this than alot of the 'modern-day action' films out now.

it was and of course still is the perfect action scifi movie to me.
it kicks ass, action nonstop , entertaining as hell, and looks very nice (top production value emmerich style, high production value, beautiful photographed scenerie), and it is quite rough and tough throughout the movie. stylish and rugged both
and of course the style of 80s 90s movies kick todays movies ass in every aspect (action, look, visuals )
