Belts mean nothing. They're just a part of the older systems. Mostly just for people who want to boast and instigate conflicts. Muay Thai, Jeet Kune Do and Krav Maga (not entirely certain about KM) don't have belts, and those systems are far more effective than the older belt w/katas styles in my opinion. All belts mean is that you've replicated all the old techniques that have been static in their systems for decades, even centuries. And no matter what belt someone may be, they will be annihilated without knowledge of grappling/submissions.

For survival reasons to avoid these confining rules would be a smart way to operate at least if they turn out not to work for the fighter and with that he would just switch back to his own rules and give up his commitment as he is first commited to his life.
Every good martial artist has to know that the form of rules as we learned them in KARATE JUDO BOXING ETC is the way to avoid survival.
But this is a contradiction to the therm MARTIAL ARTS.
As this means THE ART OF WAR with or without weapons.
In our society there should be no point to do combat with a honorable commitment to rules as this embraces not survival rather more the rules and honor codex of the fihgters indoctrination.

Let´s see here... Van Damme is a simple black belt 1st Dan in Shotokan Karate. He competed a little in his youth and was even European champion of Semi-Contact, a type of karate competition. After getting popular, he no longer continued with martial arts training, instead he´s a little wuss who´s only concentrated on developing his body and elasticity for doing his "little kicks" in front of the camera. Let´s not compare a person who has a few years experience in karate (1st Dan) with a 3rd degree Kyokushinkai Karateka like Lundgren who´s quite used to k.o. combat. In a real fight, Lundgren would absolutely murder Van Damme.

Don't forget Van Damme was in the super blockbuster video-game-to-movie adaptation "Street Fighter". He was so incredible in that movie. I remember playing SF when I was a kid and I thought: "You know, if they ever made a movie, the most badass character they could ever get to play Guile would definately be a tiny, pretty-boy looking Belgian with an awful accent and zero charisma."
I'd take Van Damme over Lundgren any day of the week.... in a ballet, perhaps.
Lundgren is 6' 4" (and looks like he's stronger too), a better martial artist in a more ruthless form of Karate and Van Damme is essentially a good guy with good agility and style (and he's 5' 10")

BTW don't understimate Karate. The problem they faced is that with modern practice these martial arts lost all the moves from jiu-jitsu, all the techniques that the warriors from old used to do when unarmed : using atemi is important too... But if you throw away the nage and katame, well you're **** up !

No rumor here - Van Damme certainly did get beaten up by Chuck Zito at Scores. Witnesses in the police report say Van Damme took his glasses off Hollywood style to look tough and Chuck knocked him out before he could raise a finger. Talk about following confined rules. I live in NYC so i remember the newspaper the next day this happened. Its true but Zito sucker punched him. He said it himself when he appeared on howard stern's show. He was also saying how van damme could take a punchand he's strong. He said he didnt give van damme a chance to do anything. Everyone has to remember also that van damme was DRUNK as hell. Who cares, Chuck Norris would destroy both of them? I heard a rumor that Chuck came onto the set and pissed both guys off. They tried to hit Chuck the same time and it had no effect. In fact they say their punches were like throwing a grape at Chuck.
