The Ending Rocked!

You have to agree with me, the ending was awsome.

Yeah, I agree - anyway, this film's main goal to show up the human greed that's inside any of us. Kickass kinda movie!

I have to disagree. The ending sucked. The rest of the movie was building this slow tension all the way, with small things happening all the time, until everybody just shot each other to death or simply just ran away in the end.. wtf.. looked like the filmmakers just ran out of film or something. Too abrupt.

I have to disagree. While I do understand that the film did have a build up of tension, it was obvious that it was going to come to some major climax. The small amounts of action and violence that happened over the course of the film were so over the top that a major shoot out at the end seemed to be the only way to go.

And so we must agree to disagree then ;)

I still think the ending was too abrupt. They could've at least finished the Bill Paxton-character's story or something.. he just ran away and the bum got the treasure, wtf?

reply

I think they did finish his story.

First off I agree there were better ways to tell this story other than the way Walter Hill did. I agree with that, but I think they wrapped up Bill Paxton's story. Throughout the whole story he was pretty a frightened guy. I'm sure by the end of the film he was just happy to be getting away with his life. That would explain him leaving without the gold. If William Sadler had been the one to see the Bum I'm sure he would've put two and two together and took the gold.

As for the bum getting the riches it kinda makes sense. He was ignored though the whole movie for the most part. No one took his threats, or knowledge seriously. They did not respect him. He sat back and just went along for the ride and end up getting the biggest prize. It was irony. All those powerful people died over the gold only for it to fall into the hands of a person looked at as a failure.

I'm not trying to change your view on it KnatLouie. I can respect your stance on it. I think the story would have been better if it were a bit smaller in scale and focused more on character than action.... Could it have had a better ending? Yes... but I thought the ending they choose was pretty well thought out.

Another thing too, Bill Paxton's character was dumb. Dumb and without courage. I wouldn't call him a complete coward, but he was somewhat of a pusssy. William Sadler's character wasn't smart, but he was savvy, like many of the gang members, and also pretty courageous and ruthless. Bill Paxton's character ran off in the end, because he was scared. The bum never was scared, just powerless. But his knowledge combined with the situation ended up giving him power and when you combined that with his lack of fear, it is very explicable why he ended up with the loot.

i pretty much agree. I think it was such an awesome and actually cool film that worked, that any ending would be a letdown, but this one wasn't. It was a good ending. Like you said, the one no one respected won the pot. Pretty cool, maybe een totally cool.

And I still think Savon was the snitch (though some people think it was Lucky, who could've snitched without even knowing he was snitching). The movie moved with such grace, we forget about that question.

Now go away or I shall taunt you a second time
that's not funny!

I don't think Bill Paxton's character was a pussy at all. I admit that I wished he could've had a fight scene with Savon at the end, because William Sadler had almost all the action. Vince, Paxton's character, was the smartest character in my book. He knew the odds were stacked against him and didn't want to risk his life for greed like Don did. Don obviously went crazy, when he pointed his .45 at Vince ranting; I WANT THAT GOLD!

More or less, Vince was smart enough to walk away when he had the chance. If any character was dumb, it was Don for giving Lucky one free hand to plunge the needle into him. Had he been smart, he would've backed away and held his gun on the kid, making sure he didn't try anything funny. I would never stand that close to a black gang banger when he had a sharp object in his hand that he could turn into a weapon.

I always hated the ending to this film as it just sort of happened. Especially the way King James and Don died. Very generic and abrupt. Savon didn't even get a death scene. Strangely, the trailer on the dvd I don't remember seeing in theaters back in 92' but do remember some very awesome tv spots around that time that looked so much better than that horrible trailer on the dvd. Does anybody have any old vhs tv spots? They made the film look pretty awesome.

I agree, Paxton's character was the smartest because he didn't think the gold was worth his life. Everyone else with the exception of the Bum died trying to get it. I agree though, the bum making it out with the gold was irony, I loved that. In a way, I wished that Vince got it as well but it was still a good ending.

I hated how Don & King James died but I'd chalk that up to a good shock, no one saw that coming.

Vince was easily the most conscientious character in the movie.
