Even better than I remembered it.
I loved this movie in the 90s, but I just re-watched it, with the benefit of maturity. It’s better than I recalled. The scene with the cry for “We need bigger fucking guns” is something I clearly remember; but the film concealing the totality of the Big Bad from us till the end is outstanding. The hints are delicious, as when the creature rises out of water behind Hauer and we can see it enormous bulk. This is horror strip-tease, with the emphasis on the teasing and anticipating. Any dumb slut (and by no means are all sluts dumb, thank God) can drop her pants, but where’s the fun in that? She wants foreplay. So do I. Repairing of the intellectual partner with root growers character is formulaic but spot on. Kim Cattrall is perfectly cast as seductive but strong and most likable and vulnerable. The Big Bad is clearly an amalgam of rat and its victims. How? Why? The ambiguity is part of the entertainment.
