sharei was wondering the exact same thing about the mother son thing. i think it's gross how it promotes incest.
shareI don't know why the mother son thing happened, but my only way to reason for it (because I was so disgusted) was maybe they were big on incest because they were part cat. I mean, a lot of animals are incestual. That was my only guess.
shareFirst of all they are not human, only pretending to be human. All evidence points to the fact that they have lived for many, many years. The words "mother" and "son" are words they use to blend in with humans. They have used those words for so long in public, that it has become second nature to so in private. Simply, they are nomadic lovers who have survived for centuries under the guise of mother and son.
shareOoh, good call. That would make the most sense. It just sucks that the movie didn't explain more of that.
shareActually, I believe they are truly mother and son. He calls her MOM and MOTHER even when they are alone together and she refers to him in one scene as "MY BABY!" I think it is gross, but at the same time, if they aren't human then it is not as bad. Animals do it all the time in nature. We actually have a mother/son pair of dogs and we had to get the male fixed because they would have sex when our female was in heat. It's just a male animals nature to breed with whatever liable, in-heat female that is around. It's definetly creepy and gross that they are mother and son, but I don't deny that they aren't.
shareThey are mother and son. I believe they breed because they are a dieing species and they know it. Like they mention its been years since they've seen another sleepwalker.
shareWell for me, I always thought that the Sleepwalkers having intercourse was the way they fed each other. If you look, when they are in the act, an unmotivated light is actually forming beneath them as if they are transferring energy between the two of them. Then later in that scene, we can see that the energy they generate (even from not having eaten for a while) is great from looking at the window of the room that they are in. It actually manifests itself in an odd blue light and due to our culture, (which I'm sure is different from theirs) we interpret that as intercourse. I mean in vampire lore, Vampires do not engage in the act and merely use it as a tool to lure victims for themselves to feed on.
shareAfter reading your descriptions on the scene between the mother and son, I had to look up "unmotivated lighting". You must be a film student or something. I had never heard of the term, so I thank you for making me investigate its meaning.
shareWhen I first saw this movie at the movie theater I thought it was gross as well. That was the scene that I did not care too much for was the mother and son sex scene in this movie.

But unfortunately, that was probably one of the few scenes that delved into the mythology of the Sleepwalkers and provided some insight into them.
shareif you you think this film "promotes" incest i feel sorry for you.
shareSo they weren't really mother and son?
shareWell how can it promote incest when you see in the mirror what they really look like
It would be promoting incest when a cheesy couple of young people would save the day and close it off with some good incestuous sex, because they are really like us
Still it freaked me out too, a bit...
Isn't incest even among animals quite rare. Doesn't it only happen in captivity or when the species is dying (note that the creatures were almost wiped out too)
maybe her son was the only piece of ass she could get being that she stayed locked up in the house because she feared cats. i thought i was a pussy but this woman takes the cake.
shareI dunno. I thought it was because they originally came from Ohio. J/K
No offence to anyone from Ohio. It was A JOKE. *grins*...Because they SAY they're from there, just as an excuse...
i think it's gross how it promotes incest.I think you should read your dictionary and look up the word "promote".
It also promotes COP KABOBS!
I like when Bunny comes over and both tits pop out. That's a great fnckin' scene.
Well there's a couple of things here.
First off, the incest issue is...sticky. Biologically speaking it takes generations to come up with any sort of freaky side effect physically. Cats can inbreed generations, if there aren't any particularly nasty recessive traits. See that's how inbreeding works to creat genetic defects. Normally, with two unrelated parents, you have two more or less unrelated sets of dominant and recessive genetic traits. Your Mom might have a recessive history of cerebral palsy in her line and your Dad might have a dominant trait for nearsightedness. So when you're born, there's equal chances that you'll be normal, be nearsighted, have cerebral palsy, or have cerebral palsy AND be nearsighted.
If you're committing incest or inbreeding, two people with the same family traits (a recessive history of cerebral palsy, for instance) will likely kick up the recessive trait more often than otherwise would occur. Over successive generations, the genetic roll of the dice will kick up those recessive traits more often.
Now, as for humans promoting it...do you know why hemophilia (where your blood doesn't clot properly) is called the "Royal Disease"? Because the royal families of Europe interbred exclusively with one another (and only with other royals) for so long that the hemophilia trait became dominant for a while. One of those dirty little secrets. And up until the eugenics craze of the late 1800's it wasn't illegal in the United States. And when it changed, it wasn't for biological psychological reasons (inherited problems like schizophrenia, etc). It was for social psychological reasons. Your relationship with your father isn't quite father/daughter if you also have a sexual relationship, etc. Psychological damage occurs due to the rather severe confusion of gender roles, roles in the family, etc. Plus it's not necessary to carry on any sort of race (plenty of humans moving around spreading their genetic information around).
Anyway...Didn't look like this movie promoted incest to me. For one thing, would you say the mother and son's relationship was all that mutually healthy? She's smacking him around half the time, then twisting it into an excuse for sex. Likewise, if you take the "feeding by sex" thing as an allegory, then she's feeding on him. Taking his energy away. It quickly turns, in that respect, into a vampiric sort of parasitic relationship.
I thought the whole thing was really nasty, to be honest. They were reprehensible monsters, both physically and psychologically alien and abhorrent. I didn't watch the whole movie, but the part I did watch was pretty nasty. It certainly didn't look like it was "promoting" the concept of incest to me.
