What;s the problem between S.W.'s and cats?

one thing I don't get is if they are related to cats (the defition in the beginning said they had human and feline origins), then why such a hatred between them and cats? You'd think they'd be like kindred spirits and get along..

Kinda wierd

Any ideas?

The Sleepwalkers are first and foremost shape-shifters and the reason I thought their appearance was more feline in nature was because they'd take the form of the scariest things they could think of. Due to the fact that cats could kill them, to their race it more than fits the bill.

As to why there was such a hatred between them and cats, in the opening credits we see various historical artifacts showing a fractured chronology of exploits of Sleepwalkers throughout the ages with the first dating them back to Ancient Egyptian times. To me, the deliberate juxaposition inferred that they are either decendents of Bast and/or Sekhmet (the Egyptian Cat Goddesses) that fell from grace or that they belong to a race that are the supernatual nemesis of Bast and/or Sekhmet. In one way or another, I think the Egyptian Cat Deities empowered cats (the deity's decendents) with the ability to destroy Sleepwalkers. The opening montage does a pretty interesting job of espablishing some of the facets of the film's respective universe. I definately recommend watching the whole film a second time around with that knowledge and you'll be able to pick up on alot.

I think possibly, the cats saw the Sleepwalkers for who they were, as it's said animals can sense evil and the cats, in this case especially, can sense it better than any other living thing in their vicinity.

Cats also seem to be the most dangerous to the Sleepwalkers which is why the mother seems to fear them so much - it's the cat attack that leaves her son badly injured.

I suppose in some magical way, it's just supposed to all make sense, it's fantasy-horror, and it isn't supposed to really play by the rules I guess.

I know this is a really old thread but I always wondered about that too. It seemed like a more natural enemy for them would have been dogs.
