The Different Habit

Why did that young nun only have half a habit.

*Go see Ron Burgandy and smile*

reply

Because she was training to be a nun, she wasn't a complete nun yet.

Well there are different types of nuns. Not all wear the typical black and white habit. There are habits of all colors, depending on the order of nuns. The black and white habit, although still worn often , is actually not the most common. A pure white habit is actually the most common.

And nuns don't "train" per say, when one wants to be a nun they join a specfic order and take their vows and go from there, but there isn't a different habit for them. Especially since in the second Sister Act she was wearing the same habit. Who knows why the the movie did that. It is Hollywood they do all sorts of things and send out all sorts of misinformation. Like conveying the messege ALL nun's habits are black and white.

I a considering joining an order after I finish college, that is how I know this. I am not just making it up LOL.

Anyway, I adored this movie , one of my favorits. I love some of the lines from the movie. And the soundtrack is pretty good as well.

Not sure though if I feel the same about Sister Act 2.

Dreika, soz if this sounds rude, but, ure not becomin a nun 'coz of the films r u

reply

Actually I checked with a nun and Sister Mary Robert is a novice. Since Sister Act 2 takes place a year after sister act and your a novice for three years it is believable that she would wear that habit in both movies

I went to Catholic grade school eons ago and I remember someone asking the nuns about the habit, what they mean, who wears them etc. Now this is the 1980s i'm talking about...from what I remember the response was that back in the day there were rules for the kinds of habit and anything else they wore, but the rules are less strict and those that continue to wear any piece of the outfit do so based on tradition or if anything, whimsy or some ceremonial occassion. Otherwise, they're free to wear whatever whenever.

Well, it depends on the religious order. These nuns are supposed to be Western Carmelites, and they're a rather traditionalist lot. Most North American orders of sisters (and there are literally thousands of religious orders within the Catholic Church) abandoned the formal habit decades ago. The same goes for male religious orders. Many priests and brothers don't bother with robes anymore, with some exceptions, for example, the Fransiscans, who still wear robes at all times.

The correct answer is that she was a Catholic, noviciate nun. Not training per se, just a test of devotion. Sistermaryrobert29 is partly correct. If you wanted to look at the story from analytical standards, yes, she was chosen to be a young noviciate to give her individuality. All that aside, she is more charming than anyone I have or ever will have seen or known of.

reply

She's not a novice, she's a postulant.

I really believe that one of the main reasons Mary Robert (Wendy Makkena) wears a different habbit from the other Nuns is so her character has more individuality.
The film makers weren't that bothered about being overly realistic within the film, just look at the storyline!
Did anyone else notice that Deloris (Whoopi) stuck out a bit, I mean she was the only black Nun there!?
Don't get me wrong though, I love this film and think its awesome.

I think I agree with you sistermaryrobert! She seems to be different from everyone else there and a little younger than most.

I loved this film a lot, I am so glad my mom showed it to me!

Hi xxrizelle318

When did you first watch Sister Act? I watched it back in 1993 when i was 6 years old, i didn't really like it then (maybe because i was to young?).

But it was on TV earlier this year (Sunday 13th March 2005) and i just felt like watching it because there was nothing else on.

As the film unfolded i found myself compelled to watch on... and then was blown away when Mary Robert started singing, Oh My Gosh what a voice!

Tell me about the first time you watched Sister Act and how you felt about the film?

Also, have you seen Sister Act 2?

Mark.

P.S. "Oh My Gosh" is a quote from Mary Robert : )
