not a catholic... HELP!

Why does Mary Robert wear a different habit than the other nuns? I don't know much of anything about nuns and their dress code... anybody out there who does?

reply

I don't exactly know maybe because she is younger...

Since I have the pleasure of playing a nun in both The Sound of Music and Nunsense Jamboree this summer, I might can explain this. Sister Mary Robert is most likely a postulant, and they wear a different habit first before they take the three vows and recieve the ring, binding them to God.

She has yet to take her final vows and go through the marriage ceremony binding her to Christ as his bride. The others have all gone through this and are full-fledged nuns.

Simply stated she was in the process of becoming a nun. The uniform worn by the rest of the nuns is called a 'habit'. I was raised Catholic and I lived next door to a convent in the parish of Sacred Heart in Saginaw, Michigan. Our house happened to be across the street from Sacred Heart Catholic Church. The life style of the nuns depicted in the movie was reasonably accurate. Nuns do live a life that is minimalistic and commit themselves to service work as brides of Christ.

Simply put, she is a novice who has not taken vows yet and is not fully a nun.

Maria was a novice, too, in "Sound of Music".
