Love this movie but it makes me a little sad.

I really love this movie, it is a classic comedy. However, one day quite a while ago I looked up a number of the cast and the majority of those nuns are all dead. Just made me feel sad. I guess the director is dead too? I realize this movie is about 20 years old and many of those ladies were "old" at the time the film was made, no one lives forever. It is nice that this has been captured for people to see for years to come.

To each their own...opinion

macgirl, I completely agree. Very sad the people themselves are lost to us, but kinda wonderful something of their personalities and talents is preserved.

You might very well think that. I couldn't possibly comment.

It's a shame about the director, who died at age 50. However, I'm not sad to
see Mary Wickes, even if it was in one of her final roles, sparkle in this film.
It's nice to know that she was still able to deliver a wonderful comedic performance after so many appearances in classic films over several decades.

I'm not crying, you fool, I'm laughing!

... tmaj, check out "The Father Dowling Mysteries" <"http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0096582/combined">;...
... in the 2+ season run (20Jan1989 -- 02May1991) of the series, the delightful miss Wickes portrayed the salty and acerbic housekeeper Marie Murkin... not as humorous a role, perhaps, but with biting wit intact!
... Mary was Mary right to the end!

We still have the important one's Whoopi, Najimy, Makkena, and Maggie Smith, don't care much for the rest.

reply

Wow, you're an a$$hole.

reply

Very aware of that fact.

reply

But no Mary Lazarus.... perhaps she shall rise, again. Mary Wickes #FTW!!!

I agree that it's very sad. This is probably my third favourite movie; it's the same way with my favourite, 1776, which was made in 1972. Only about 7 cast members are left, and it breaks your heart when you think how so many great talents have left us. But it's as you said, it's good that they were captured in these films before they died, so we can rewatch it and remember them.

reply

I love 1776! Did you know it is finally coming out in Blue Ray in June? And there's a bunch of new extras!

How sad, that you were not born in my time, nor I, in yours.

reply

Really? That's awesome! I don't have Blue Ray, but my grandparents do, and they adore that film. I'll check it out!

I like the thought of those old troupers going out as singing nuns. Mary Wickes was so funny. I think she must have grabbed the best roles of her life in her last few years. Perhaps just a little smile of regret that they are no longer with us. But what a great laugh they have given us.
