So what if she wanted a white roommate?
I am not sure what the big deal is if you were to feel more comfortable living with someone of the same ethnicity. I do not think it means you are racist.

shareWell it may not make a person racist, but one has to question why would someone prefer a certain race over another in the first place? I mean what's the reasoning behind only prefering a white roommate? That has certain implications, don't you think? One implication being that the person has some preconceived notions about non white people IMO
shareI think you two are reading something into the film's title that really isn't there. The ad Allie placed read:
SWF seeks female to share apartment in west 70s. Non-smoker professional preferred. 555-9814.
It doesn't say the roomate has to be white, it just says that she herself is white.
I'm well aware of that fact, I was talking in a general sense. I was simply going off what was in the other thread about people expressing a color preference in ads for roommates.
shareI think some people may prefer to live with someone of the same race because they might feel more comfortable living with someone from a similar background. While I believe people of different skin colors are all equal in every way, they tend to be different when it comes to some cultural aspects. People from similar cultures tend to be able to relate to each other more, and people who can relate to each other tend to bond more. Of course all of the things I have just said are certainly not always the case.

I agree with the first part of what you said...which is why I said it is "not always the case." However, I think it is a little "close-minded" to be inconsiderate of the fact that some people just might not feel comfortable with it. It would be nice if the world were less "prejudice" towards so-called "racist" white OR black people who would simply prefer to room with a white OR black person. I don't think there is anything wrong with it, and I don't really think it's anyone else's business, either.
shareI am a male and would only want a single white female roommate. No one else need apply or I will take them to see the new blockbuster mega-hit "The Roommate" coming to a theater near you soon and then departing just as soon.
shareShe's a designer. It's possible that someone with darker skin would clash with the decor.

I agree with the OP. Your apartment is your space, and you need to feel comfortable in it. Whether she wanted a bi-lingual 11-fingered older woman in there or simply a single white female, who cares?
Its her apartment, her choice. It doesn't mean she's racist.
"I'd say this cloud is Cumulo Nimbus."
"Didn't he discover America?"
"Penfold, shush."
-First of all as harlemsushi said people are reading in to something that is not there, since the ad said "SWF seeks female to share apartment in west 70s. Non-smoker professional preferred. 555-9814." She doesnt say SWF seeking another single WHITE female, so whats the issue? And I agree with mushooisi and I think that the non-smoker detail is more discriminating :-p
"Death by stereo" -The Lost Boys
Yes it does
shareSingle White Female refers to Allie not Hedy. She's saying SHE'S a SWF not that she's looking for one.

In the book, the ad read: Single white female seeks same, indicating wanting a white roommate. However, in the movie, it read: Single white female seeks female, so she didn't specify the race she wanted, although it did turn out that her roommate was also white. Despite that difference between the movie and the book, when the movie originally came out, I do remember hearing some black women complaining about her wanting a white roommate and "that's what she gets" for wanting a white roommate. I guess you just can't win with some people no matter what you do. ;)
shareWho gives a *beep*
shareWhy is this even a discussion? That's not what the ad said. What more is there to discuss?
sharethe original book it was from specified a white applicant (in the title), but the film made it clear the applicant didn't have to be white (I thought). However, yeah, I'd have concerns about the films title if I was making it.
