I did not see a single tie with the school's insignia throughout the entire movie.

In an early scene, David's roommate lends David one of his extra school ties. That's obviously the pivotal scene of the whole film, hence the title.

School Ties might be referring to the TIES that bind people together throughout life.
Not an actual neck tie.
