Circumcision?

If David was a Jew wouldn't he be uncircumcised? If so how come none of the other guys noticed it when David was taking a shower?

you have it backwards.. as a jew, he was the one who was definitely circumcised.. as for the rest of them.. maybe some were, maybe some weren't

reply

I think circumcision has been commonplace in this country for the past 100 years or so, so most, if not all of them, would probably be cut.

reply

Ya you have that backwards, Jew would definitely be circumcised. But as mentioned, so would a majority of the other boys as it is common practice in North America.

In 1955, it depended on location, finances and the doctors opinion whether or not circumcision happened.

Plus, these were teens, born in late 1930s, early 1940s.

My uncle was "home born" in the winter of 1942. My grandparents couldn't afford it and there was a huge snowstorm coming, the doctor was worried about getting to the farm if there were complications, so he wasn't circumcised.

People didn't drive 20 miles everyday into town like they do now.

If anti semitism was that prevalent in the upper crust, I doubt many of them would be circumcised.

All typos are hereby blamed on my iPad.

No you forgetting something here. While maybe a country born person like my ex husband's grandfather who was born in 1907 was uncircumcised. But the upper and middle class were being told that it was far more sanitary to circumcise the boys. Less chances of urinary infections, it was also told to them that boys would have less of a need to "play" with themselves if they were circumcised because it wouldn't itch.

Before you ask how I know, family history and gossip. All the males married into or born into were circumcised from the date of birth of 1930 at least, and on.

Circumcsision is popular in America. And I'm sure most guys don't look at other guys dicks anyway.

I wondered the same thing when I first saw the movie. In a shower guys will (and do) look not meaning they are necessarily homosexual. An occasional glance around is normal - perhaps if a guy or two have long foreskins. They are noticed more.

No, he would be circumcised. But actually, most men are that way to begin with. I don't know anyone who isn't, Jewish or not.

Interesting comment; How do you know who is circumcised? Is whether they're circumcised or not a usual part of conversation when you meet someone?

reply

I know in my experience when I'm with other guys and the talk turns to sex the topic of whether you're "cut" or "uncut" will usually come up. So it's not like it's a taboo topic and never discussed about in the open among us blokes.

No, Jews circumcise.

The movie takes place in America; in America, the majority of white boys are circumcised, especially back then, when circumcision rates were in the 90s percentage. So, the others wouldn't have been able to tell he was Jewish simply by observing his circumcision status, since they would be cut, too.

Now, if the movie took place in a country where circumcision was not the norm, then, yeah, he'd stand out. For example, take a look at the movie Europa Europa, the true story about a Jewish boy in Nazi Germany who pretends to be a gentile to survive. At one point, he ends up at a Hitler Youth school and has to hide his circ status by using string and rubber bands in various painful ways to simulate a foreskin, so that the others don't discover he's Jewish and send him to a concentration camp.
