David did stab Dillon in the back over the girl....
Maybe not a blatant stab but a devious one.
The girl wasn't very nice in the way she suddenly rejected Dillon either.

Sally makes the first move by phoning David. On their first "date," she tells David that she and Dillon are not in a relationship.

Fowler's knots? Did you say ... fowler's knots?
Sally makes the first move by phoning David. On their first "date," she tells David that she and Dillon are not in a relationship.
David knew Dillon liked her. He should be a friend and talk to him first. He instead goes behind Dillon's back and get the girl.
In view of later events, that would been the wise thing for David to do. But Dillon had no right to unilaterally declare that Sally was "his girl" and expect everyone else to respect that.
Don't forget that David was only 17 years old and a very pretty girl manifested interest in him. While it was wiser to dismiss her because of the prospects of endangering his friendship with Dillon, or at least let Dillon know about the situation, David chose a riskier option, especially considering that the girl was not dating Dillon and had never done so.
