I mean a private school where you live on campus. I'm working on a story and I'm wondering whether you're allowed off campus after school and for how long and what about the weekends? Do you have to stay on campus the whole time? Most of the movies only show them go off campus when they have to do something related to the story.
I went to a private boarding school from 7th to 12th grade. No, we were not allowed to leave campus as we pleased. Think of it like a normal high school... Students aren't allowed to just pick up and go without permission or they would be considered truant. At boarding school the faculty, administration, and the house master (the adult who lived in the dorm responsible for keeping order) all assume the same responsibility of your parents. Our days were actually quite regimented from the time we got up to the time we went to bed. Underclassmen (grades 7-9) were never allowed to leave campus without an adult escort and this time out was always pre-planned with a specific purpose. We were always in small groups and never one on one. Upperclassmen (grades 10-12) were allowed to leave campus on their own if they were in good standing academically and socially. However, only during certain hours and we always had to log our in/out time and destination with the headmaster's office. Curfew on school nights was 9pm and 11pm on weekends. Sneaking off was never really an issue. School was pretty demanding and most students were really focused more on studies and sports than running wild in town.
I have wondered about boarding schools to Jay. Thank you for the details. Did you by chance attend an Ivy League university? And don't you miss your family? I am sure with cell phones and e-mail, it helps with that. Other films like Dead Poets Society show some mothers crying. Is your school still open?
I went to boarding school grades 9-12. We were allowed to go into town at certain times if we signed out, and we could go somewhere in a car with a day student if we got permission. On week nights we had study hall from 730 to 930, which was almost never enough time to complete the work, and after that we could hang out on campus (go to the snack bar etc...) but we had to be back inside our dorms at 1030. On weekend nights we had to be back in the dorm by 1130. We had Saturday classes until 100 every other weekend so those Friday nights we had to be in early. We could leave for the weekend for overnights with friends or to visit our parents but we had to get permission.
You're right, I guess it's not the time but the fact that they're the only students there. Sally says it's the hangout, but it looks like it's just them and some people from the town.
But if others had been there then Charlie would have known about the two of them sooner.
