nude scene
Wondered what people thought of the nude scene, where Tim Robbins climbs out of a mud bath, completely naked, to answer a phone call! Kind of revealing, don't you think?!

Yeah, it seems rather out of place! Still, everyone is used to seeing naked or semi-naked women on-camera but not naked MEN---especially what's in front!

It was quite eye-opening and I was a little surprised that Robbins agreed to it. I don't recall him doing a lot of nudity, as a matter of fact, that is probably the closest I have ever seen Robbins to nude. The mud covered up quite a bit though.
shareOne of Altman's main goals as a director is to show people in a realistic light, he tries to capture real people as opposed to stereotypical characters. So it makes sense that he wouldn't bother covering someone up. Especially seeing how Timmy was so vulnerable at that point...

I detect both both penis fear AND envy here...
shareUh or neither, I guess its fine if people talk about naked women, but if its a man its different? Do you go onto the threads for female nudity and tell people they suffer from breast/vagina fear and envy? God im sick of these freudian losers still rehashing already debunked cocaine driven hundred year old theories conducted on mentally unstable people. Your statement only reflects on your thinking, xmonn, thanks for the insight
shareThe character Tim Robbins plays, has just told June that he killed her boyfriend. She prefers not "to hear", but it's there in the air between them, and when they are both in the mud bath, they don't talk, but there is a very awkward atmosphere. He feels "naked" in front of her eyes, and he's afraid of what she thinks, and it's obvious that she's thinking about it.
So he's full of dirt, but goes out naked to get the phone. It's a reflection of how he feels about himself, and I believe that's the meaning, and not so much the comic part of it, although the whole scene is awkward in a comic way.
I love when people can do that. I'm not as good at it.
shareIt was revealing, but I assumed it was meant to mock the commentary that reoccured throughout the movie--there was one or two occasions where someone said a good movie needs comedy, sex and nudity, etc. But the funny part is, they never really show nudity...he is covered in mud and during the "sex" scene, we're only shown their faces.

I didn't see that scene. I was freaked out by snake I saw earlier so I figured in that scene there would be another snake so I skipped it.

Fantastic scene! Just wish there was more of a close-up and less mud so we could see gorgeous Tim properly!!!! ;-)
shareThere also is the scene at the resort where an anonymous couple gets into a grotto-type pool and begin a romantic encounter.
The focus in that shot was on the woman, but the man was also nude. Interesting that scene seems to have escaped the notice of the posters here? As someone mentioned earlier, it strikes the audience as normal as long as it's a naked woman. . . . . which I suspect was part of the point. "Nudity" was in the list of required elements for a successful film. So Altman fulfills part of the requirement with nudity that is covered in mud and not particularly eroticized -- we can check the box off, but not in the expected way.d
I think the game was being played with the sex scene where Griffin confesses. Yes, it's a sex scene. . . . but I doubt if many people would find it sexy. Again, follow the rule, but not in the way that is expected.
My. I read this entire thread. I thought you were going to talk about the sex scene. I know he was trying to confess to her, but putting that aside, did you notice there was no kissing? Yet there was a lot of time focusing on their lips.
shareEverything they say in the movie that a good film needs to have is in this movie. Remember when he said a film that sells needs violence, nudity, sex, heart and all that other things? This film tries to encompass all of that, including the happy ending of course.
