What about the boy who played Lorenzo....
Wasnt he worth winning some kind of award for that extraordinary work he did with that role?

reply

i think so

reply

Nolte deserved the award---his performance in L.O. was in the top ten male dramatic performances I have ever seen. As for the kid who played Lorenzo, he had a tiny part and didn't deserve an Oscar nom.

reply

Pretty remarkable for a 7 year old actor to imitate a boy with ALD.

Just watching this on our national TV. Nolte is realy bad here - too much overacting so he look like charicature of Italian...

But the boy who played Lorenzo at early ages... my God! He is trully amazing!

reply

I agree with arminio &others in the other threads about Nick Nolte's acting, couldn't help but wonder how so many people find it convincing, extraordinary... beats me. It's not entirely Nolte's fault, but nature's: he is what you call six foot five or something and blond-haired (...errr, umm, I mean, sorry for the cliche' :-)
-he would really have to study that part of the role (communicating like an italian, especially with THAT looks) instead of just letting his talent play. I didn't say he SHOULD have studiED because what's done is done, but maybe someone will give him another similar role because he was so ..."fantastic" (??)
I live in Croatia, Europe, work in tourism and have a lot to do with (northern) italians. I grew up in Switzerland where many (southern) italians work. So I suppose I know what I'm speaking of. Anyway I did notice that many of the comments to this film come from young folks so they are not to blame, I probably would have been as impressed at 18 or 16 or so.

You do get blond Italians; it's a bit stereotypical to think they're all dark-haired with a great tan. And to English speakers, his Italian accent was fine(perhaps native Italians felt differently but that's the way accents usually sound like to people from the origin of the accent).

Look beyond the accent, he was brilliant in this role because you truly felt this was a man whose beloved young son was very sick and was refusing to accept death would be the final outcome. But he also had to face his wife's denial that Lorenzo was that sick and her guilt that it was her genes that caused the illness. It was an excellent performance and you'd never have thought this was an actor used to playing gruff cops.

reply

yea i agree about sterotyping the italians im from sicily and most sicilians are dark haired people in rome / northern italy are actually light haired more blonde...

and for the boy who played Lorenzo excellent job he should have gotten an award it was incredible for a 7 year old to act in a role like that.
i actually watched it today also it was on HBO

reply

There are blond Italians, especially in Northern Italy. Franco Nero and Terence Hill are Italians, too.

reply

..but there is noplace on earth where people talk like Nick Nolte does in this movie.

reply

I don't know about that. I had a Florentine professor in college who talked and acted exactly like Lorenzo's dad. Exactly.

And I've known several blond Italians, mostly from the northern part of Italy.

reply

I could not *beep!*ing believe it. There were enough breathtaking performances in this thing to sweep the Academy Awards, let alone Nolte. It would also have gotten more publicity for the Myelin Project (myelin.org) -- What else came out that year?! The fix was in for sure.

reply

I once heard that Nick Nolte listened to tapes of Augsto Odone to get his accent/pronounciations just right.
