Question about when he chokes on his spit

I have seen this movie and it's really good. Heartwrenching to see what Lorenzo and his parents went through, but still good.

One question. When he chokes on his spit, his parents leave him laying down and try to calm him down. Why the heck didn't they sit him up?? When I choke on something and I'm laying down, sitting up helps. Sitting Lorenzo up would have helped him calm down by letting him get out what he was choking up.

Sitting him up may have helped calm him, but it would not have helped clear his airway and likely would have made the blockage worse. It is not a seizure, basically it is the same panic that you and I would feel if we started choking except he is unable to effectively cough or gag due to the neuromuscular paralysis. Normally when a patient with neurological disease progresses to this point they would be sedated and hooked up to a respirator, this is alluded to in the film. Mrs. Odone was likely very vehemently opposed...
