Why does Hawkeye help the British??

Why does he and his two friends help the British at the beginning? I mean risking their lives, is there a specific reason? Towards the end we know he loves the girl so i get it, but at the beginning...?

Because there were people getting massacred by a murderous war party waging war on him and his friends. Perhaps also because at that stage he has at least nominally a British colonialist and was on the soldiers side.

Honor or they was brought up that way,to aid the needy. They was going to only guide them to the fort.

It always bugged me how the movie makes the Iroquois allies of the French while they were actually on the side of the British.

I understand that the villain (Magua) in the book pretends to be Iroquois to fool the British, but in the movie it is not established or hinted at. He and his war party are all Iroquois.
