Considering this is supposed to take place on or near the Hudson River in New York, why did they choose to film in what is obviously the mountains of North Carolina? Just a matter of convenience, or are there other reasons? This is a wonderfully done, epic movie. I would think they'd want to be more authentic
"...why did they choose to film in what is obviously the mountains of North Carolina?.."
Three reasons:
1- North Carolina has lucrative film incentives
2- It's a Right-to-Work State (and this production was barely Union; by the very end of shooting, Mr Day-Lewis did double-duty as a make-up artist because the Union crew had been laid-off)
3- Upstate New York, even its rural areas, too developed (with overhead wires and aeroplanes) Even in North Carolina, most locations were hours away into the deep countryside
