what were those nasty haircuts called?

you know, the ones that look like 'fros cut into cylinders above the guys head. Every character in this movie was sporting a cut like that, with a weird like slice near the forehead.

anyone know the deal with that?

i apologize for my immense ignorance. I mean c'mon, not knowing the ins and outs of ghetto culture? How dumb can a guy be? ;-) Especially since i'm sure you're an expert on other cultures, such as mine (indian).

i guess it's just a crime to ask, when you got self-important pricks such as yourself prowling the boards ready to put someone down. go take out your anger somewhere else.

LOL, you know between all the people cursing amongst each other and the madness going on IMDB I think it's wonderful I get to answer a question like this. The hairstyle back then in NY was called a "Gumby" aka High Top Fade (for obvious reasons). I have to admit when I was a kid growing up in the Bronx I saw my share but never did succomb to the allure of the gumby. Glady, it is part of my and the world's history and thankfully Juice and New Jack City immortalized these for all those to see and wonder about.

********* agreed.

I thought the Gumby was only when it was slanted at the top and not flat across because it looked like Gumby's head....

Boxes, fades, gumbies and high-tops were out of style by the time this movie came out in '92. Their hairstyles were very 1990, which is probably when this movie was shot. Probably late '90 or early '91. Movies are shot about a year before they come out, usually.

Hey, hda2003, Im Indian myself and I was laughing my head off at your post. Where are you from by the way? If u come to the UK, maybe your intelligent self will look around and see that many young Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi and Sri Lankan males of today have almost that exact haircut..ok, maybe not the "cylinders" (wtf?) u talk about, but they spike their hair up and have exactly the same fade and some even designs too, because they do what theyve always done and copy black people. And besides, what exactly is wrong with that "cylinder" haircut anyway? It looks a hell of a lot better than hairstyles of today, with today's equivalent being mainly shaved heads or crap Ludacris-style braided hair. U know in 10-15 years time, they will look at hairstyles of today and say exactly the same things..it happens in every decade, but I can wholeheartedly say, there is absolutely nothing "weird" about that haircut. Just look around at today's fashion (or rubbish excuse for fashion) and hopefully, you'll see that they are instead "weird" and "nasty". Looks like old skool cuts are the best.

Well back in those days(late 80s-early 90s) growing up outside of the illadelph, I used to rock the "box" that's we called those cuts around here. They were original because some guys had the infamous towering high-top fade, the gumby style, and the slope, which was shaped like a ramp. Some guys had that Kris Kross hair style which looked cool at the time but ridiculous by todays standards. Then in '94 when people got rid of their boxes they started getting Philly Fades which was a lower fade without the box on top and the sides tapped with a "hook" part on the top.It was sad when I parted with my box but I still have my memories and pictures. Today I wear a low easy to care for style usually waves.

I wonder when all those cuts r coming back? should be soon.

Actually contrary to what another user mentioned, I think the high top peaked around 91'-92'.....I'd say by 1994 it was pretty much dead. Strange how 1992 and 1994 there was a pretty huge difference as far as changing of styles.

My significantly younger boyfriend wore a high top fade. It made him look even more fine. :-) Ah, those were the days ...

I'm 30 years old and at the time had a "BOX" as well. Yes! By the time Juice came out the style was on its last legs but people still rocked it like that until maybe mid 93' when the Buster Rymes DREADLOCK with the tapered sides was coming in and afros were coming back as well as a result of the whole Snopp Dogg deathrow era. Strangely I see young kids trying to bring this style back. It's really bizarre to see kids who didn't grow up with that style try to rock it again.

I was a young kid when "Juice" came out, but I remember dudes with high top fades, and low cuts with with parts along the side. I'm guilty of having that. It was part of the New Jack era.

@Jackson-219 You are correct! The fad ended around 1993. I also remember dudes with the boom boxes. Heck, my dad had one two. If you excuse me, I'm feeling very nostalgic right now. lol
