"Johnny Suede" is a unique, minimalist fantasy/low-key comedy about a guy who dreams of being a famous musician while living in an apartment in New York City with not much more than an old record player, a black and white TV, a bare mattress on his floor, and an empty refrigerator.
Emphasis on the word "fantasy," complete with more than a few dream sequences, some of which one doesn't realize are dreams right away on the first viewing.
Two-time Oscar-nominee Catherine Keener does excellent work as one of Johnny's love interests and watch for Samuel L. Jackson in a small role as a member of Johnny's band. The soundtrack sizzles with 3 entries from Link Wray, the late, legendary "power chord" rocker.
The movie takes a little patience at the beginning, because there are some slow, oddball scenes, but it's a hip, quirky little movie that's quite enjoyable. The director followed "Johnny Suede" with the excellent "Living in Oblivion," which gained a much wider following.
