I agree with your post Em, you said it better than I could. No one is saying the Joe was on the right w/ how he treated his family, but I do believe he loved them nonetheless. It's hard for us, for those who grew up in this time & age, non-Black & w/ a comfort this family didn't have back then to look back & judge a person unsparingly w/ a very narrow POV. Life must've been more than difficult for someone like Joe Jackson, especially for parents who saw little to no opportunity for a growing family. If you were in their shoes, wouldn't you do anything, ANYTHING to make sure your kids get out of the hellhole you're in? To make sure that no matter what, your kids will have a better future than where you are now? Suffering, struggling to make ends meat in a dead end job? That sort of desperation will drive a person to do anything, especially if it was for their family, their kids, their own flesh & blood, instead of leaving the kids to end up in jail, dead or murdered in a crime capital like Gary, Indiana.
