Kind of sad, but I realized that we never see teen/ adult Michael really happy in any scenes. Even while performing he's very serious. Plus, adult Michael and Joseph never have any dialogue which shows the distance created between the two. Wylie did a very good job of portraying the complex person that Michael became.
shareI think the reason behind that is because he was forced to act 'grown up' long before he even hit puberty. He wasn't allowed to have fun and be like other kids his age because so much was expected of him. His siblings (including Randy & Janet despite being younger than him) got to enjoy their childhoods more because not as much was expected from them as it was from Michael. I might've played a part in why many people saw his behavior as an adult odd and weird.
