Merchant and Ivory at their best

I'm a big fan of the Merchant/Ivory movies, and HOWARDS END is without any doubt the highlight of their careers(as well as one of the finest pictures ever made). Here's my top 5:the best of the Merchant/Ivory team.

1.HOWARDS END
2.THE REMAINS OF THE DAY
3.A ROOM WITH A VIEW
4.MAURICE
5.Mr & Mrs BRIDGE

Does anyone agree?

A Room With A View is my favorite Merchant Ivory production but i have to agree with you that Howard's End was right behind it. It was a beautiful movie! :D

Where Angels Fear to Tread is Forster. It's not Merchant and Ivory. Great movie though.

It's Forster, but not Merchant/Ivory

1. A Room with A View

2. Howards End

3. The Remains of the Day

A Room With A View is my absolute favorite. It is just perfect and beautiful film. Remains of the Day is my second favorite. It just breaks your heart.

"Maurice" is my favourite, but I haven't seen "A Room with a View" yet.

Ignorance is bliss. Sammy Malone must be very happy.

"Maurice" is my absolute favorite Merchant-Ivory. There's just something about that movie that stayed with me for a long time. I think it's the love story between Maurice and Alec, and the happy ending.

It's also got brilliant acting, gorgeous scenery, costumes and production design, a beautifully haunting score; however, all M/I productions have this same high standard. I think the stunning Rupert Graves is what pushed Maurice over the edge for me.

I think "A Room with a View" comes second for me, then "Howard's End", then "Remains of the Day".

I've only seen 2 Merchant/Ivory films :(
But I LOVED them. "Maurice" and "Howards End"
I think I'm going to watch "A Room with a View" next, and then "Remains of the Day"

reply

Indeed. I rewatched it last night and was reminded what a staggering piece of cinema it is. Maurice and Remains are superb but neither quite comes close to Howards End.

There was real magic at work here. All the elements meshed beautifully together and Merchant Ivory were in top form with this production. Could be quite possibly, the finest period film ever made. The detail and feel for the period is astonishing, capped off with superb performances.
