So, what happened to Paul?
Is he just a McGuffin? He breaks off his engagement, vanishes to - where again? Nigeria? - and is apparently never seen or spoken of again.

shareWell, he starts off the story highlighting that the Schlegels and the Wilcoxes were already quite close. Then he does leave to start business dealings in a colonial country.
The majority of Mr. Wilcox's business and the rest would go to the eldest son, Charles. Paul would have been expected to go out and work for his share. The book makes small hints that the Wilcox family are not as affluent as they portray themselves to be or would like to be. The film doesn't quite touch upon how the children were suspicious of Margaret being a gold digger as the book does. It also doesn't stress how the Schlegels being absorbed into the Wilcox family gave them some polish.
Its very much a story about class war.
He was in the end of the film, with his father saying how things would be divided up with Margaret getting Howard's End. He had become somewhat arrogant by that time, but then again I found most of the Wilcox family that way.
