Boy at the end of the film?

Spoilers ahead obviously for the end.

When Helen is playing with her son in the field, who is the other boy that's with them. He looks about he could be 8-10 years old which puts him out of the running to be a son of Margaret and Henry or Charles and Dolly. Anyone know?

reply

The boy's name is Tom.

From http://www.gradesaver.com/howards-end/study-guide/character-list/

Tom
Tom, the little boy who delivers milk and eggs to Margaret and Helen in their first evening at Howards End, comes to be the first friend of Helen's child.

Also, here's chapter forty-four of the book (last chapter): http://www.enotes.com/howards-end-text/chapter-44

It has the scene in the film that you're asking about. The film doesn't really explain Tom's character like in the book.

reply

Ah, thank you! I'm about 3/4 through the book now but that clears things up!

reply

Yes, it does clear things up. I assumed the older boy was "diddums."

reply

Isn't he the same boy Mrs. Avery showed the sword to earlier?
