Why do I like Housesitter?

I like Frank Oz movies. It goes against everything else I really like. Housesitter is a perfect example of a movie that, for some reason, I can watch over and over again. I don't know if it is a numbing effect or if I really do like the movie. It's sort of embarrassing to look at my movie collection (really top drawer), and then see Housesitter in the middle of it. I think it's just enjoyment. I enjoy, in some deep and mysterious fundamental sense, watching Housesitter. I won't try to defend myself or otherwise, I just somehow have always liked this movie. Fire at will, I'm practically begging for ridicule in saying so. Go ahead, I can take it.

where is new england? it is a pretty house, would love to go there actually
wonder if that house is still around???

reply

I had read that the house that Martin builds for Dana Delaney ...and that he finds Goldie Hawn living in...was built just for the film and was taken down after filming was completed.I'd still wanna go to the different areas that the movie was made in just to see all of that beautiful scenery that was used in the film.It is such a beautiful film that it looks like a world that's too wonderful to exist.

There are a number of very funny Goldie Hawn movie, none of whose titles I can think of at the minute. The ones with Chevy Chase are more slapstick, but they are funny.

reply

Couple of really good ones with Goldie Hawn and Chevy Chase are from the 70's - Foul Play and Seems Like Old Times which also features Chares Grodin. they are really funny

reply

Other Jennifer, me too! I love to bake, and this is one of those movies that I just let play while I work. It is so charming. Obviously it is not Oscar material, but it doesn't need to be. It makes me feel good. Other movies like that for me: My Fellow Americans, Death Becomes Her, and Princess Bride.

You don't need a reason to like House Sitter; it's just light hearted enjoyment.

my god its full of stars

What's not to like about this? It's funny, it's upbeat, it's engaging, it's bright, it's fresh. Everybody in it seems to be having a good time; the comedy is a perfect combination of sharp and warm. It's one of those movies that when somebody says, "They don't make 'em like they used to," you say, "Try this."

Isn't "discussion" the good, the bad, and the ugly of a movie?

If it were only positive material, it would be "Movie Promotion Message Board".

If someone says, "This part was subpar. They should have done it this way." can be considered positive to some and negative to those (with a thin skin). ("Mom! He's staring at me!")

On the shelf?
I see no reason for it to ever leave the player!

Can anyone tell me what it is that Syeve Martin sings to his Dad? Supposed to be a song his dad loves...

reply

It's Toora, loora, loora.

Gwen only makes up that his dad loves it; no one really knows until the performance whether or not his dad will appreciate it.

i too like this film. its so cute and sweet and funny too. Steve Martin and Goldie Hawn are great together also. i always watch it when its on TV. i would buy the DVD but only if it were cheap, haha. love this film

reply

if you want to cry and laugh you should see the same story with indian actors the film name is "Chori Chori" i saw it first then i saw "housesitter" and i found the Indian film is more a live with Rani the name of the actress acting and Ajay the name of the actor unmoving features _ the " Housesitter" has some closeness between the two major characters . but if you want to cry and laugh see the Indian "Chori Chori" .

reply

cry as in sad? and laugh as in you actually went out of your way to find Chori Chori?

reply

I'm glad there are people out there who appreciate this movie. It always motivates me to clean the house. I also love the way Goldie Hawn dresses in this movie.

reply

Yup that was one of the funniest things in the movie... hehe

reply

I think there are two main reasons why I love this movie.

1) I saw it when it came out at the movies when I was 12 and laughed my a$$ off at the Tu-ra-lu-ra-loo bit :)

2) Its a sad and beautiful story about a woman who is doing what a lot of women do really well, ie: fix/make the best of situations. She's likeable, womanly yet very youthful and natural. The fact that she tries to get Davis back together with his ex at the same time as trying to keep him for herself is so entertaining and sweet/strange.

She is a very strong and exceptional woman who also is lonely and vulnerable.

in short, its a true human story.

Love it!

For me its that ONE scene with Martin singing tooraloohra ... I dont know but its gets me every time.

reply

It is a very good movie. The rating is too low. Good, funny, movies are underrated on IMDB all the time. Everybody seems to want action/adventure. They get bored with just a comfortable funny movie.

i've had this on tape half my life or something, the translated title i know it by sounds funnier. don't remember much of it now, one thing that has stuck in my mind though is where steve martin has this whole clothing issue with goldie hawn, actually, i think that's the ONLY thing i remember about it.

if i could only tear down the wall,
that's between the open world and my soul,
seems like every door i pass,
underneath lay rubbish talked behind my back,
as i'm trying to cover up a scene,
the way i go about, i'd look like mr. bean,
in the dark night,
there's no longer a fire to be found,
i search from city street to country door,
the fire i can't lit no more,
like kind you do, i can't let people in,
like stuck glewed shoes, i can't go where you've been,
as i'm going back home,
i can let loose, the wall of stone.

It's pure, light-hearted enjoyment!! Just plain sweet and funny, like a celluloid confection.
