It thought the same when they announced a second "home alone".
But I give the writers credit. They pretty much covered the bases to the point where suspension of disbelief would allow us to buy the circumstance that he would get on the wrong plane during the melee at the airport. Even though he wasn't left "home alone", he was left behind.
The only thing I would have done was to write the opening a bit different. I would still have the power go out, the digital clocks flashing, but just when we think the same "over slept" situation caused the confusion as in the first movie, a vintage mechanical alarm clock wakes them up. Aha! They covered that base!
But the transport buses get caught on the highway in a backup caused by a truck jack knife, and they are late to the airport.
Mayhem then ensues on cue..
