Why is Kevin impressed with his hotel room ?

When Kevin first enters his hotel room, he is quite impressed by its luxuriousness.

This does not make sense to me since Kevin is clearly from a wealthy family and should therefore be quite accustomed to this level of luxury.

Anyone agree ?

True, but the Plaza is beyond their middle class lifestyle means.,its like $1500 or more for a standard suite overnight.

Do you really think the McAllister's (Kevin's parents) are living in the "middle class" ?

Having such a huge house and paying for a huge number of people to go on holiday seems to be higher than "middle" class to me.

reply

Yes, Kevin's family is clearly loaded. I think it's what the other poster said, that he is more impressed to have a fancy hotel room all to himself.

reply

Yes, they are middle class. Upper middle, if you prefer, but still middle class.

They aren’t of the Rockefeller, DuPont, Hearst, Vanderbilt, etc. class — nor the 1990s equivalent.

Hotels like The Plaza are where Kevin’s parents *might* stay for a special event, like treating themselves for an important anniversary (20th, 25th) trip to NYC to see a show and eat at a Michelin star restaurant. But they couldn’t afford to do that every day, and certainly wouldn’t bring their kids.

But he also has the whole suite to himself so it's more impressive to him.

"has the whole suite to himself"

agreed

I think it's being overlooked that Kevin probably has never been in a hotel before. I mean he usually gets to stay home alone.

LOL

Huge plot whole

Better than being locked in the attic for a week how they usually leave him.

reply

He's a kid and he's alone. This is all his. Of course he's impressed.

reply

I think it’s more along the lines of that it’s all for him.
