Good modernized version of a Capra classic

Although it's not acknowledged, this is undoubtedly a remake of the Frank Capra classic "Meet John Doe" with a slight twist making it a tribute to the ideals of the original without being a attempted imitation or remake of the same name. Although a few of the characters are overstated caricatures of the original cast (most likely for comedic purposes) they make the film more palpable for modern audiences and keep it from becoming too saccharine or maudlin.

Agreed 100%. A total rip-off, but still okay...

I'm glad I was not the only one who kept thinking that this felt like a Capra film.

You weren't. The director made sure of it in the final scene when the marching band drowns out LaPlant's confession to his son... Like the ending score of Capra's Christmas classic, "It's a Wonderful Life", the marching band is playing "Au Lang Syne".
