Uncredited actors

I remember noticing how Chevy Chase was uncredited in this movie the first time I saw it. I thought it was funny because it was also the most "downplayed" part I had seen him do until then. (This was not long after he had his streak of blockbuster comedies in the 80's.) Now when I checked the credits here on IMDB I saw that there are a handful of uncredited actors, some of which are very familiar faces. (Edward Herrmann, Fisher Stevens.) Makes you wonder why, huh? :-)

I'd also add that I think, like most others here, that this is an immensely underrated movie.

Uncredited cameos are usually because the actor wants to be in the movie but can't get his usual fee. Sometimes, it's also a favor or on a lark. Doing a camero is a positive thing, not to be inferred as someone being ashamed to participate. Just the opposite.

But Chevy Chase had a major role in Hero. It's not just a cameo. There has got to be a story behind why he is uncredited. If you check the rest of his filmography, there is only one other movie that he was uncredited, LA Story, and that WAS a cameo.

Chevy was only in a few scenes, which still constitues a cameo or a guest appearance. It still comes back to one's fee. Especially at a time when Chevy's career was on the slide, this was something different for him. He likely wanted to do the role, but it was a supporting role, not a lead, and he wasn't in the power position of, say, Bruce Willis, who will do smaller roles in small movies because he likes the material and will still take lesser billing. My guess is Chevy, who'd obviously been a big star, didn't want to become pegged as a supporting actor which would've lead to similar offers, which would've meant fewer or no starring offers from then on.

Also uncredited, it may very well be the legendary (and late) Don LaFontaine who voices the promo for the upcoming reenactment of the Flight 104's tragedy. I'm 99% sure it's him, and he really hams it up. It's roughly 73' into the movie.
