Is this Hoffman's Best Role

Dustin has won two Oscars for Rain Man and Kramer Vs. Kramer. Also, he has several nominations. But, nothing for Hero. Why?

I have an old DVD of this movie with Chinese sub-titles. I lent the DVD to a Chinese man. He was very impressed. He said that Dustin's performance was the best he's even seen. I admit the only other one he's seen is Kramer vs. Kramer but his praise was noteworthy.

I have to concur. This was an Oscar worthy performance.

Surely Hoffman's best role would be 'Rain Man', 'The Graduate', 'Tootsie' or 'Lenny'. He was good here but he was also playing a variation on Ratso Rizzo from 'Midnight Cowboy'.

Hoffman's most underrated performance IMHO is in 'Family Business'. Your heart really goes out to his character in that one.

Good point about a variation on Ratso Rizzo. That could be a partial reason why "Hero" is so underrated.

I also think this is a great performance by Hoffman, especially the part where he's talking to his son on the phone.

I love this movie, and Hoffman is the main reason.
