Chevy Chase as Deke was Uncredited... Here's the inside scoop...

While film fans world wide have watched 1992's "Hero" and questioned if they saw Chevy Chase playing the hard-bitten TV news director, Deke, the answer is yes, that was Chevy Chase.

But why was he uncredited in the film?

Contrary to the popular notion that Mr. Chase's ego was at work and it was due to his opinion of the film, his position in the credits or his aged appearence being less than flattering, it was none of these things.

My niece who is a "Hero" fan as well as a Chevy Chase fan was friends with someone very close to the Chase family and this young lady laughed at all the invented reasons for Chevy's name not appearing on the credits.

"'Chevy' was under contract with Warner Brothers at the time", the girl answered, "Columbia Tri-Star borrowed 'Chevy' for the part which Warner Brothers allowed as long as he would go uncredited". In as much as comedy must run in the family, the young lady added a well known film quote, "It was nothing personal, it was strictly business".

I think he was very good in his homage to "Larry King".

He was playing his part just like the newspaper chief in Mr. Deeds Goes To Town, the way he spoke, and another nod was calling Gale "Babe." It was an homage to Mr. Deeds Goes To Town.

I think Chevy was channeling Perry White in the movie. Not Larry King.
