Which version of Hellraiser 3 do you like best?...

.... The R rated theatrical cut or the unrated version?

Unrated.

Unrated is best I agree, there is a Hellraiser 3 workprint on Archive.org if you're curious about that.

Unrated.

I mean, how much Gore is too much to give this an "Unrated" over the R-Rated version which I saw back in the day when this came out??

I'd like to see the unrated cut, don't believe I have. More sex and nudity is always preferable for me. Never have to worry about violence and gore in horror, it's more often the nudity that gets cut, particularly in any American production. I just watched the (I presume) R-rated cut of this. During the sex scene, the man pointedly keeps his hands firmly over the woman's breasts to prevent any view, which of course looks just as contrived as it is. It's funny how you can have them literally crotch to crotch, with her legs wrapped around him and watching him thrust into her (all simulated, but still) but it's REALLY important not to show a female tit. The blonde actress Aimee Leigh was really pretty and sexy, I thought.

There's actually two R rated cuts, the one that was first released on VHS in 1993 and the second on DVD in 2006. The one on VHS was more heavily cut than the current R version we have now, the sex scene on the VHS was missing quite a bit of the thrusts but restored on the 2006 DVD. I found out that the current R version that's on DVD/blu ray now was actually the NC-17 cut that the direct submitted to the MPAA, but it had to be cut down so I'm guessing that cut was re submitted in the 2000's to get a new R rating for the 2006 DVD release and has been the standard version ever since. The unrated version that was released on VHS in 1993 was actually the European version which has even more nudity and a few more shots of aftermath gore, it also has extra dialogue/character scenes that were not in the R rated version. The unrated version is still the most complete cut despite the current R version actually being the original full uncut NC-17 version for the US release.

Confusing to keep all the versions straight. I just watched the one streaming on Amazon, which is unlikely to be anything but the R cut. Runs 93 minutes. Sounds like its the one that was re-rated R for the 2007 DVD.

reply

Yep, the 93 minutes is the '06 DVD version. The '93 R rated VHS/theatrical cut was 91 minutes and the unrated version is 97 minutes just to make things clear.
