I felt really sympathetic for Peyton

It was very understandable to see why she lost it. In a short span of time she:

-Finds out her husband has been molesting patients
-Get's deeply embarrassed by all of it
-Becomes a widow after her husband kills himself
-Finds out she won't get a penny of his money, and, on top of that, while pregnant, is told she can no longer live in her home
-Miscarrries in a pretty terrible way.

It's quite pitiful for her because she was already emotionally insecure. If she never found out about Claire and decided not to throw her life away like her husband, she would probably be looking for another man (probably divorced with childrenone might assume) and a job ASAP.
