Why was this such a huge money maker in Japan?

I can't quite wrap my head around it. There were better films in the Heisei series than this one. Was Mothra really that popular at the time?

Apparently, the Japanese movie makers thought it would be profitable to remake their own movies. Us Americans are just as guilty as charged.

I read somewhere that single women and children were the key demographics as far as movies are concerned in Japan. Hence, Godzilla vs. Mothra and the Rebirth of Mothra Trilogy.
