1st prize. A nice car. 2nd prize. Steak knives????

I've always wondered how in the heck do they go from first prize, being an expensive luxury car to second prize being so much cheaper and nowhere near as exciting?
May as well have second prize be a teddy bear.

Damn, I'm good.

Personally, and probably completely wrong, but I thought the set of steak knives was some kind of metaphor for stabbing people (including your close work-colleagues) in the back!

That is a good point!
Wow, you are really sharp to come up with that one!
I bet you are a real cut up at parties and with your friends!
You could be right and are not making a mis-stake with that one!

In all seriousness, I really do like your answer.

Damn, I'm good.

reply

Good one.

Real reason for 2nd price being steak knives is cause a sales person should never go for second price.

There was one other prize, although it may or (more likely) may not have been an original part of the contest: continued employment after the end of the month.

It's a cruel joke on the part of Mitch and Murray to illustrate vividly to the sales force that second place is strictly for losers. That's why they get such a chintzy prize.

It's all of a part with the theme of the film...devaluing and humiliating employees, pushing them to the breaking point, etc.

reply

The "prizes" were intended to get progressively worse in order to "incentivize" the salesmen and create a competitive work environment. Mitch & Murray are not generous and do not like giving out rewards. The only actual reward was to go to the top salesman. To them, second place should be happy to just be able to keep his job.

1st Prize: Cadillac
2nd Prize: Cheap steak knives (but you keep your job)
3rd Prize: You're fired
