Did not care for this film

Being a huge Pacino fan I try to watch every movie he has been in. I heard some good things about this film but never got to see it until recently. I was rather disappointed. I'm sure I will get a ration of negative replies but we are all here to discuss the good and bad right? I found it to be very boring. I put it in the same category as Reservoir Dogs, a great cast with a lousy script. Anyone agree?
I guess I just go for movies with a little less conversation and a little more action!

reply

That's ok. It's not for everyone.

Let's be bad guys.

reply

Thank you PreachCabel for being nice about it! I know people on here especially can get very mean and up in arms.

reply

You were polite about it and didn't slam the fans, as some people are wont to do.

Though to be sure, I fully disagree with you about both Glengarry Glen Ross and Reservoir dogs.

I love a good "talkie."

Let's be bad guys.

reply

Fair enough. To each their own right. Like they say it would be a very boring world if we all liked the same thing. Who knows maybe one day I will give both movies another chance.

"I put it in the same category as Reservoir Dogs, a great cast with a lousy script. Anyone agree?"

No.

reply

Well, that's like your opinion man.

reply

Resevior Dogs was boring?? We must have watched two different movies called Resevior Dogs then.

reply

Of course everyone is entitled to their opinion, but if you think Glengarry Glen Ross and Reservoir Dogs had LOUSY scripts...well, you're in the extreme minority among movie lovers.

reply

I caught that reference ^^ (TBL)

please don't review another movie again

The action is all there - verbal violence, slashing insults, macho horn-locking, fear, provocation, desperation, murderous anger - it's in the hearts of the different characters and its the words that have done it. If you imagine you were there on the receiving end of all that verbal abuse and can feel some part of what they are feeling, it's a very battering experience. If you simply watch and listen, I agree its just words. It is perhaps a guy thing - the Baldwin character is so provoking his listeners that in normal life they would have hit him but here, he has power and they want to keep their jobs so they just have to take it

I saw it in the movies when it came out I think '91/'92? I forget, I'm now 42. My old man dragged me to see it, I was 17, I didn't mind it, but I didn't fully appreciate it, meaning I didn't really understand the "adult" *beep* Watching it now, I mean yeah, it's not an action movie, it may not move fast, but that's just not what it's supposed to be. The acting & dialogue is really 2nd to absolutely none. Also I think it's what put Spacey on the "map", only 2 years later he played that all to famous 'infamous' Keyser So?e.

reply

To each his own, but the film is a masterpiece. It's a clinic in acting and the screenplay crackles with subtext and wit. You feel the tension and what's at stake in every word.

reply

I thought it was a 6/10 but I do find Reservoir Dogs to be much better.

I didn't care for the dialog in this, it didn't feel natural at all, it felt like stage acting, almost Shakespearian to me. It doesn't matter that all of them are *beep* that can work, but I need to be interested in what they say and importantly how they say it. What they said was good, but how they said it felt like lecture after lecture instead of natural dialog. One extended monolog after another that felt stilted with the opposite actors doing little to nothing. Spacey just stood there and listened pretty much.

The actors were good, the plot seemed fine as well to me, but I definitely don't think it deserves high praise for anything other than nostalgia reasons and I have enjoyed many dialog driven movies. Like "12 angry men" or yes, "Reservoir Dogs".

"You'll be taking a soul train straight to a disco inferno where you never can say goodbye!"

That's a fine comparison. Don't forget, this was originally a play. Naturally, it'd fell like stage acting.

Gotta disagree with this. I never saw it when I was young. And I still thoroughly enjoyed it.

Seize the moment, 'cause tomorrow you might be dead.

reply

I quickly can forgiven the stagey monologuing for two reasons.

First. It was originally a stage production.

Secondly and more importantly - these characters are seasoned salesman. Their job is to talk and to be unnaturally gifted as talkers. You'll notice that the ones who never had any talent for the trade (George and Williamson), they never have those moments.

If the way they talk seems impossible to you and likely something you could never do, then you'd probably be the type sitting in the bar someday, saying, "I used to be a salesman. It's a tough racket." *Gulp*

I personally love dialogue-driven movies, and character-driven movies the most. Movies that mainly focus on great dialogue or movies that feature greatly-written characters who are then played by powerful actors. If it combines the two, then an even greater plus.

I think that's the reason why this is one of my favorite movies. It has great dialogue and great characters and great acting.

People like my older brother, however, are not such a fan of movies like this. He likes movies with intriguing plots, where they do more than just talk. Not necessarily action-packed, but where things happen. Of course, he appreciates good acting and dialogue as much as the other guy, but if those are not supported by a great plot then he tends to not like them. He hated There Will Be Blood and this movie, but loved Reservoir Dogs and The Godfather (I love all 4 of these movies). All 4 of those movies are heavily dialogue and character-driven, but the latter also contain a moving plot with lots of things happening. The former, not so much.

It's just opinions, and no one can say that your taste in movies is wrong.

While this film had a great cast, the movie was predictable and subsequently boring - very boring, actually. I gave this movie a 5/10 rating, which is the highest I'd give a movie I'd never watch again.

Reservoir Dogs > Glengarry Glen Ross
