Being frozen is supposed to prevent cells from producing, therefore your body does not age. I don't care if it was an experiment in 1939.
I think the general idea was that while you could freeze a living being and unfreeze them later on years later. Unfortunately it caused cell damage, and the cells in his body died a lot quicker and thus causing him to age rapidly as a result.
To boot his finally asking that woman if she would marry him, I mean really? How did he know she was not married to someone else by then? The ending was just so horribly contrived and ruined an otherwise good movie.
His friend Harry's daughter explained in the film that she got married but her husband had died a few years earlier. However at the time of her life and age, it would have been doubtful she would have married again.
