Movies were made for entertainment and to "take you away from reality" sometimes. This is one of them. Just enjoy it. Some may say it's sappy or mushy and look for all kinds of flaws. To those I say you have been tarnished by too many reality shows and you have no imagination. The message of the movie is one true love. Something that sadly doesn't happen to people any more.
Well said 'margins'. It's a beautiful film and never fails to bring a tear to the eye. Being ex-Royal Air Force I also love the flying scenes! One of my favourite films and I think the use of Billie Holliday (The very thought of you) was inspired.
I agree, I liked this movie. And slimsage, don't you have anything better to do than to criticise others for their spelling? This is IMDb not an English class.

It sounds as if, on some level, you take this as a documentary that records life as it once was, rather than as a fantasy that springs from a subjective mind and culture.
The message of the movie is one true love.
Could it be that the film conveys more interesting messages than that? And aren't you contradicting yourself by insisting, on the one hand, that movies are made only for entertainment, while imposing your interpretation of the movie's (one?!) message on the other?
Maybe movies serve multiple purposes after all.
Not everyone craves the solace you apparently find in this movie. Personally, I think it was a contrived schmalzfest. reply share
Shhdon'tmentionclass.....umm, I won't because you sure don't have much. How is it that you feel you can bash someone's interpretation of this movie and how they view it, then at the end, force the rest of us to read how YOU took it? It's kind of contradictory to your point. It doesn't really surprise me coming from someone who thinks they are superior.
"Could it be that the film conveys more interesting messages than that?" Well, what are they? You fail to mention any to back up your point. If you ask me, the other poster is correct. It's what one man will do to get his true love back.
"contrived schmalzfest". I'd LOVE to know what movies interest you. I'll bet you nitpick a superhero movie because it doesn't stick to the comics. *rolling eyes*
As for taking you away from reality, that's what some movies are for, away from the world we live in today. You're right about that 100%. As for true love, it does still exsist. I've found it, and married her too.
Me too. When I was 18 my girlfriend at the time brought this movie over for us to watch. She hadn't seen it before and I had, but she didn't know I had so when she asked me afterward if I knew his girl was alive I could not tell a lie lol. I just watched this again for the first time in a while and I think it's still a good movie, and the OP is right. Enjoy it for what it is. They don't really make movies like this anymore, and neither does Mel Gibson.
It's very enjoyable. Elijah was cute and funny. Jamie Curtis was great as always. It's a super-sweet love story that is different than the normal same-olds.
