Was anyone rooting for Hexxus?
Hexxus didn't do anything bad. He was locked up for years and essentially all he wanted was something to eat.

Well, you obviously felt sorry for all the bad guys!
"You are my life now."-Edward Cullen
Not all bad guys.
Here is a list of bad guys who got what they deserved.
Maleficent
The Queen (Snow White)
Shadowman
Scar
Jafar
There is more, but that is all I can think of right now.

Well he was locked up and remembered as the spirit of destruction and toxins for a reason. If a guy was going around destroying my home for a meal the second time and didn't feel sorry for it, I'd be pretty mad at him myself.
Plus, he didn't really have a reason to tear down the entire forest except for revenge. If he just wanted a snack, he could have followed the exhaust from the trucks back to a city or something.
That would make sense, but Hexxus did not know cities existed given the time he spent inside the tree. Hexxus is simply a predator and the forest creatures are the prey. He is part of a balance of life that was thrown off when he was imprisoned.

He was also sentient and could understand stuff. Again, he had several bulldozers which he could follow around if food was all he wanted. He wanted revenge on the fairies, which doesn't make him very sympathetic.
shareI don't know. I haven't seen this movie.
However, I can tell you I found myself rooting for the bad guy the entire time during Avatar, so I guess that counts....
I think his song Toxic Love sums up why weshould hate him. He sang something like how he wants to eat every creature in the world and suck them dry. ewwww
shareI thought he wanted to pollute the forest. He was the allegory of pollution I thoiught.

As a kid, Hexxus scared the sh** outta me, and naturally I didn't root for him. Now, I can definitely see the point you're making and would normally agree with that logic, except someone already mentioned the song "Toxic Love"
I'm watching this movie now for the first time since 1994 (HBO), but I have a feeling that the "Toxic Love" song was supposed to help the viewer realize that Hexxus was evil.
On a side note, other than the visuals, I enjoyed this more as a kid than Avatar as an adult.
five midgets
spanking a man
covered in thousand island dressing
is that love?
I certainly was. This was my favorite animated movie as a kid, and that was mostly because Hexxus was so darned awesome. He had a charisma that the "good guys" just didn't. Of course, I often found myself rooting for the bad guys for that very reason. Why did they make protagonists so boring? lol.
shareMaggie told Crysta what Hexxus was like at the very beginning. He wanted everything, I repeat, EVERYTHING, to be dead and rotting, and he really got off on the death and destruction he caused. When he escaped from the tree, vengeance just fueled his already evil ways, so he directly went after Ferngully.
