Captain Moonlight

I was just wondering if anyone knows the origins of the phrase "Captain Moonlight" used toward the beginning of this film. Was it an actuall rallying call in any of the Irish rebellions? Does it have a specific meaning, or was it simply a made-up phrase?

reply

True. It was, in general terms, a threatening name and rallying cry used by the Irish in the 1800's when there was violence about to be done against the British and/or the landlords. Kind of like the Boogeyman, except the results were far more unpleasant and bloody.

Several Irish rebels were the supposed inspiration for the name, but there's no real knowing who was the real Captain Moonlight.
