Were there any religious or ethnic differences between Shannon and Joseph in this movie?!?! Thanks

Joseph was Irish catholic (note priest at funeral scene + the fact thatabout 95% of the Irish were catholic)
Shannen was Protestant (likely Mthodist), Joseph threatened to alert the mob at the barroom that she was Protestant and thus would be likely attacked
As for ethnicity:
Joseph would be full Irish, probably from all generations and lines.
Shannen would almost certainly have English in her, as her family is landowners and that privledge came long ago from the King of England.
