Did Steven poison Joseph's horse

I know the horse was old, but I watched this movie again last night and the question came up with me when Steven approached Joseph, while Joseph was busy with the horse. The horse could stand, walk, etc., until suddenly that night it was found dead ... OK maybe a horse doesn't have a long "sickbed" before dying, but maybe Steven killed it? He conveniently noticed which horse belonged to Joseph ...

Nah, I think the point was just that Joseph got suckered by the used-horse salesman.

I think it was the used-horse Salesman who saw a stupid "mick". "That there was the oldest horse I ever saw" was what one old man said to Joseph, so I think it was just old
