Why so underrated?

This was one of the best movies of the '90s. Beautiful cinematography, great John Williams score (not to mention Enya), Ron Howard did an excellent job directing it, the story was very interesting and romantic. I really rooted for the characters to realize their dreams, freedom, happiness, etc. I was able to relate to the injustice Irish people suffered at the turn of the century. The way the characters dreamed and hoped for land of their own was beautiful. It reminded me very much of an Edna Ferber or Willa Cather story in its love for the land.

Probably the most underrated film in Kidman's career, and one of Tom's best.

I thought it was nonsense.

Thank you for your time.

After I finally managed to sit through it with minimal cringing at the depictions of Ireland and the Irish, I thought it was quite a sweet film really.

But certainly not underrated.

It was utterly mindless, not even outstanding in terms of romance. It was....nice. Cute story, funny in places, an enjoyable one-time-watch as long as you view it with no expectations of realism.

I was actually rather disappointed with Williams' score though, not at all up to his usual standard. I only watched it because it was late and there was nothing else on and because Richie Cunningham directed it :p

It is a harmless film...that is the best I can say about it.

Thank you for your time.

I liked the film, the performances, cinematography, music.. However the story is very predictabe. You know from the very beginning those two are gonna end up together. It's very goofy at times, very commercial. I would have liked to see more drama, more tension. No wonder it's a Ron Howard film. There's a lot of comedic moments, the typical bad guy, etc. That's the only flaw I saw in it, although it's a major one for me. Back in 92 I suppose it'd have been a big thing but in terms of plot and development it hasn't aged very well. Kidman and Cruise showed great chemistry together. I wish they had made more films together.

I thought it was nonsense back in 92. I only watched it because my dads mate was singing in it.
