Last year in my US History class we watched this, and it seems like a lot of other people did too. My question though, is why? Its a great movie but you would think for history class they would show something with less of a romance story.
plus my whole class got dristracted with that scene where Shannon is peaking under the bowl when he's sleeping. best part of the whole movie. we couldnt stop laughing.
Ahahaha we just watched it yesterday and today:) I love that movie. It cracks me up. Our teacher stopped it right when she is peeking under the bowl so we could go to lunch. It was so funny:) HAHAHAHAHAH. OMGAHHHH
"I don't know. They've got brooms." Oh jeez, Jackson. You crack me up!Twilighter! ECSLFS:D
I watched it in my US history class a few months ago lol. We were learning about the Oklahoma Land Rush, Which was the ending scene with the race and stuff. we weren't allowed to watch the whole thing though sadly lol only the land rush part hehe
So if you care to find me, look to the Western Sky!!
It's against our curriculum to watch movies in class but we're offered extra credit if we watch this movie at home. I'm taking American History right now too.
i'm watching it. haha my class is so not mature enough for this movie lmao. when nicole tries to look at tom's peepee all the kids are like "OHHH she's BA!!!!! oh damn she's going for another peek!!!" i thought this movie was good/ok. i mean...tom cruise....irish accent lol but he was hot as hell.
glen coco? 4 for you glen coco. you go glen coco!!!!
They actually show this film in history classes? That's embaressing, like seriously that's embaressing for the entire nation of Ireland. My history teacher would have an aneurysm if we even suggested this film had historical merit :p
It's actually got little to do with Irish immigration -- while there still was some immigration going on in the 1890s (for that matter there is now), overwhelmingly the largest number of Irish immigrants came over following the potato famine in the late 1840s (see my separate thread).
Well, because the great period of massive Irish immigration was in the 1840s/50s (12 of my 16 GG-grandparents came over in that 10-year period).
There was Irish immigration before and after that time but that was when it was a huge social issue both in Ireland of course (the potato famine) and then in the U.S. -- the huge tide of Irish immigrants sparked a big political movement, the 'American Party,' otherwise known as the 'Know-Nothings' whose entire platform was anti-immigration.
There was still anti-Irish discrimination in the 1890s but it was nothing like the 1840s/50s.
I know all that jaystar but to say Far And Away is not about immigration because it was not about the period in which large scale immigration occured is a little ridiculous in fairness. Its like saying The Wind That Shakes The Barley was not about the war of independence and the civil war because it wasnt set in dublin and didnt depict the key events.
I remember watching this movie in the 90s when my parents had a recorded VHS version. The only movies we ever watched in my high school history classes were Elizabeth and Dr. Strangelove.
I stand for truth, justice, and... other stuff. -Clark Kent
I never heard of a student getting upset because a teacher is letting the class watch a good film. In my government class we watched all kinds of movies and trust me no one complained.
