Did the ending ruin it?

I watched the beginning up to when Shannon and Joseph decide to stay in a room together and cut to when Joseph buys his horse in Oklahoma. So, I understand if my comments aren't valued or valid.

1) I thought the ending was much to cliched. Man dies, comes back to life, they live happily ever after. I thought a sort of Moulin Rougue ending would've been more fitting, despite the fact that seeing them finally succeed after all those hardships was somewhat satisfying.
2) Does it ever explain why those men shot Mr. Maguire when he got off the ship?
3) I thought Tom's irish accent would bother me but it really wasn't too bad. He just doesn't look very irish to me.
4) I just don't see Nichole Kidman as a poor worker. Her face and build scream wealth and manners and politeness. However, I can't stand her frizzy hair. It looked a million times better in Moulin Rougue, Bewitched, etc.
