shareBasically yeah. You were given a colored flag and a horse, and you found a piece of land with a numbered flag, raplaced it with the colored flag, and the land was yours. It was a pretty cool part in the movie.
Humans are animals. Brute creatures. Their destruction can only make sense.~Akasha
It didn't always work that way. A lot of times you just bought the land from the government. But sometimes (as in this case) they would give out huge pieces of land at once and people raced for it. The guys in the movie that were shooting other people during the race were called "claim jumpers" and they would steal someone else's claim. Pretty crazy stuff.
shareOther than a quick shot of someone being "executed", they didnt really show the claim jumpers. From what I read, the Land Rush was a pretty violent affair, as many gunslingers were hired to kill and steal the other claims. Also alot of the race itself was not unlike the race in Ben Hur, with wagons trying to overturn other wagons, and riders trying to knock others' off their horses, and then of course the shootings.
shareI see a lot of people have answered the OP correctly, but it should be mentioned that the land belonged to the Native American.
